OUR MYSTERY WOOD

Ava’s Entry (19/02/22)

I cannot remember the last time I felt this happy. Alana is coming over! I wonder how I will explain to my family and friends about my twin, but I am sure I will figure it out. She is that voice I need. The person inside of me who wants to yell, and express my feelings. She is that spirit that knows when to relax, how to have fun, and brings so much joy. She’s the inner me fighting to come out. I think that’s why I am so drawn to her personality. She’s me. The me that I want to be.

I didn’t even question the message when I saw it. It will be so nice having someone else in the apartment. Maybe I can visit her world after so she can teach me the different sounds to tell time.

I look at the clock and its 6 pm. One hour left. Should I set up a bed? Make some Dinner? Get some snacks?

I don’t know. What do you do first when someone is coming over? I decide to do all. Once its 5 minutes to 7, I wash my hands and run to my room. I settle down on my table and put on our mystery wood. I see Alana in what appears to be a top and skirt that looks like what I wore the first day we met, but with flowers. We smile at each other.

“I hope you’re prepared for my grand entrance?” She says.

“Of course. I have the red carpet out already.” I say.

“I dressed the part then.” She says, giggling.

“So, how does this work?” I ask.

A message suddenly pops up. It says: ‘Put both your palms on the screen. You will have five minutes to crossover before it closes.’ It disappears.

We look at each other and scream.

Wow, it’s happening. We both put our palms on the screen, and a bright lilac light bursts out. When everything becomes clear, I see myself standing in the middle of an empty city. I see Alana fully, and I am taken aback again by how much we look alike. This tall glass line separates our two worlds. Her world is so pretty, it looks like a fairytale. A floating clock suddenly appears to my right and I see the countdown.

“Well, don’t let it get to the last minute. Come over!” I say with a big smile. (4 minutes left)

“Alana?” I say with a half-smile. (2 minutes left)

“You’re not coming are you?” I say with a sad smile. (1 minute left)

She’s just looking at me. Her hands haven’t moved from the glass. Her legs are frozen. The only signs of movement are the tears flowing down her cheeks. We keep looking at each other. That’s when I understand that she is not coming.

As time starts running out, I begin to cry as I look at Alana.

“You got this Ava, I believe in you. It’s been the best week talking to you. I don’t know if we’ll be able to meet again, but I hope someday I can visit. I am so sorry.” She says.

The glass begins to fade away, and so does Alana. Before I know it, I’m back in my room. Our mystery wood is gone. I continue crying as I hug myself on the floor. This week has been incredibly fun. I will never regret meeting Alana, and I am sure she has a good reason to stay.

I get up from the floor and pick up my phone. I start researching resignation letter templates. I find one I like, save it, and smile.

Now it’s time to face my reality with her experiences in my heart.

Alana’s entry (19/02/22)

As the bright lilac light becomes clear, I see myself in an empty forest park. The flowers are so beautiful, and the pond beside me looks magical. I see Ava in a floral-green dress that looks like what I wore when we first met. Her world looks so advanced. The tall glass separates us as our palms are touching each other.

Time starts passing, and I don’t move. I can hear her talking to me, but I don’t know what to say. I start crying. I see the smile on her face lessen as she calls out to me. That’s when I understand I can’t go.

I truly want to help Ava, and she is such a great person, but I can’t leave my mum. It’s just the two of us. What if I’m gone for long? What if I never come back?

I left a note on my dresser explaining things, but I can’t imagine how heartbroken she will be reading it. How will she explain it to our neighbours?

I know Ava has got that inner fighting spirit. She needs to work on letting it out. I know she can.

Ava starts crying.

“You got this Ava, I believe in you. It’s been the best week talking to you. I don’t know if we’ll be able to meet again, but I hope someday I can visit. I am so sorry.” I say.

“Thank you, and I hope I can visit too.” I hear her say in a faint voice.

The glass begins to fade away, and so does Ava. Before I know it, I’m back in the cave. Our mystery wood is gone. I continue crying, hugging myself on the floor.

These last few days have been an exciting experience for me. I never imagined experiencing something so surreal. I will never regret meeting Ava or my decision to stay. I get up from my position and start running out of the cave. I have to get that note before my mum does.

Now it’s time to face my reality with her experiences in my heart.

THE END.
